day 6: ballad and around the world reading challenge – book 3: Americanah

Here is three quarters of a ballad. After all, I can’t  give away the ending of the book. This is what you’ll read about in Americanah by Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

americanah 2

Ifemelu, that was her name,
Her highschool beau was Obinze.
Carefree times were spent in Nigeria.
Their bond was so strong in those days.

Their bond, is it real now?
Fifteen long years later
Their bond, what does it mean now?
Is it gone or even greater?

First Ifemelu left for America
First time in her life she felt black
Not the first time she was the outsider
First she struggled, her spirit grew slack

To London Obinze went off
Choices were few, he scrubbed toilets
Later delivered new fridges
Kicked out for papers not legit

First to return was Obinze
Licking his wounds, stood tall again
With the right introduction, his world spun
one-eighty, his life would begin again

Many lives Ifemelu would live
Choices changed with choice of boyfriend.
She started blogging about race.
Her voice, she would never lose it again.

Searching her heart she was missing
feelings that she wanted to be feeling.
She knew she had to go home now.
Would they still find each other appealing?

Their bond, is it real now?
Fifteen long years later
Their bond, what does it mean now?
Is it gone or even greater?
