Yoga quilt – blocks 1, 2 and 3

Not a stupendous name, but for now it will do. No longer an Underground Railroad quilt, but instead a yoga quilt that will have quotes stitched into each square that have stayed with me from yoga workshops, reading, teachers and classes along the way. I will probably throw in a few favourite yoga sutras. I think it’s fitting since sutra means thread and is derived from the verbal root siv-, meaning to sew. I’ll have to figure out a way to get the quotes onto the quilt. Maybe the slow way – embroidery by hand. Faster – machine embroidery. I could just write them on with markers. Maybe printed onto fabric and sewn in. I learned a technique of printing onto fabric stiffened with freezer paper from Carol in my quilting group. She set the ink by ironing a fabric softener sheet over top of the printed fabric. Her quilts include a square on the back of the quilt that includes a dedication, a quoted passage or her inspiration for her quilt.

I used this technique to add a message and a couple of photos to the inside of a hat for Nancy. I happened to use an old sweater she gave me to make the outside of the hat.

Back to the quilt, after finishing the first 3 squares a quote came to mind each time.

Square 1: Don’t believe everything you think. – Judith Lasater
Square 2: Practice, practice all is coming. – Sri K. Pattabhi Jois
Square 3: The spirit/Self/soul is a circle centred in the body with infinite radius. -paraphrased from  Swami Vivekananda. I have this one from memory, I will have to look this up again and verify it.
… to be continued…
